At Vail Valley Wellness we would love to see you through a healthy and happy pregnancy.  Chinese medicine offers a wealth of modalities to go from the very beginning stages of regulating your cycle, through the start of conception, the birth, and the postpartum stages.  During this time, there can be a lot of confusing information about which over-the-counter medications, foods, and supplements are safe and which should be avoided.  Working with a licensed practitioner can help ease some of those worries and we can treat the symptoms of pregnancy safely and effectively.   As pregnancy progresses, there are protocols to help aid the uterus in preparation for the birth.  We also can offer a lot of postpartum support by aiding lactation production, rebuilding lost Qi and Blood, and balancing emotions.  Below are some conditions we see and treat here in the clinic related to pregnancy.

  • Nausea
  • Threatened Miscarriage
  • Heartburn
  • Headaches
  • Low back aches
  • PUPPP (Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy)
  • Prolapsed organs
  • Constipation
  • Swelling
  • Breech presentation
  • Labor preparation
  • Labor induction

Infertility has become a startlingly common concern, with the CDC estimating that one out of every eight couples has difficulty conceiving and/or carrying a baby to term.  Like many gynecological issues, Chinese medicine has had great success in this area for centuries.  First, we recommend visiting your obstetrician to better understand if there are any structural issues and to learn more about your hormone levels.  All of this information can be shared with us and we can work in tandem with your Western medicine provider to prime your body for a healthy conception.  It is important to note that 30% of infertility cases in America are caused by issues with the male partner, so treating both of you may be something to consider.

We look for indications of an underlying disharmony within the body and often time the Kidney Qi can be deficient when treating infertility patients.  The Kidneys, which are the foundation of health in Chinese medicine, are often over taxed with our busy and stressful lifestyles. This crashes the cortisol levels and throws the hormonal balance out of line by disturbing the Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal axis (HPA Axis).  Poor dietary habits and our increasingly toxic environment further tax the Kidneys.

Herbs and acupuncture are great for balancing hormones so that your body is working as optimally as possible.  By treating the underlying patterns of disharmony, we often have great success.  To regulate a woman's menstrual cycle (including emotional fluctuations) we generally see solid results within three cycles.  For fertility treatments we recommend 3-6 cycles of herbs and acupuncture.

Acupuncture and Herbs are also helpful during and after pregnancy. More and more research is showing how important a woman's state of health is during pregnancy for the developing fetus.  By affecting the neuro-endocrine system we can keep you happy and healthy.
